Pandit Subhankar Bannerjee, a highly talented tabla player, is a representative of the Farukhabad Gharana.
He started his career at the age of five years and was popularly called the musical wonder kid. Born in a family with musical ambience, he has grown up with listening to music from the very first day of his life. He started his formal training in tabla at the age of five with his father and singing with mother. He used to accompany his mother for her training with the legendary Rabindra sangeet singer, Suchitra Mitra. It is said that he remembers every line and notation just by listening to the lessons by Smt Mitra to his mother.
At the age of five, he was placed under the tutelage of the renowned artiste and teacher of the Farukhabad Tabla Gharana, Shree Swapan Shiva. Over the course of time, he has also learnt different styles from maestros of different Gharanas.
He is the recipient of many awards not only in India but worldwide. A reputed soloist, he has received awards from many prominent artistes and celebrities like Satyajit Ray, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Apart from this, he is also a competent vocalist and has over hundred recording published all over the world and has been sharing his stage with other renowned musicians of the world.
A prolific musician, he has received widespread recognition. He has been presenting music in other countries like UK, USA, Europe and many more. He has also performed at the prestigious “Nobel Peace Prize Concert” in Oslo along with a duet of Pt. Shivkumar Sharma and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia when Indian classical music was presented for the first time in 1999.
He has performed with famous Greek Clarinet and Saxophone playerPetrolucas Halkias and along with Lire player, Ross Dally on Greek Ethnic music and Indo –Greek fusion band in Greece since 1998. He has also performed in Brazil and was invited by the Pakistan government in 1997 to perform on their 50th anniversary. Last but not the least; he was invited by Prince Charles in London to perform with John Mc Laughin and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia in February 2010.
