Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya belongs to the famous Mihar Gharana. He is the only Santoor maestro belonging to that Gharan and has, in true sense revolutionized Santoor, a musical instrument as well as its style of play.

Also known as the celebrated torch bearer of Indian classical music, he is recognised all over the world for his wizardry in Raagdari and Layakari. His music touches the inner soul and mind of the listener.

He was born in the year 1951 and brought up in Kolkata, received his first musical lesson from his father, Pandit Robi Bhattacharya. He was also a student of Pandit Dulal Roy. Later on, in the year 1982, well renowned maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar accepted him as his student. His education and performances on television and Radio have been awarded worldwide. Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya’s Santoor appeals to the general public as he has adopted to the changing times despite maintaining the classical genre of music. Hos Santoor transcends countries, cultures, gender, religion and age.

Bhattacharya’s style of playing Santoor differs from other Santoor players in tones and timbers. He has developed a technique that includes sliding/glissando technique, in which he also makes use of his fingernails in picking patterns by hammering with one hand and plucking with the other. He has also developed an additional technique that involves palm mutes during dramatic sections to produce a melodic conclusion.

His most unusual and stirring contribution is a modified string at the bottom of the instrument, tuned to a very low pitch. He has also modified his Santoor in such a way that it facilitates ‘fine tuning’ during performance as there are chances that the Santoor may go out of tune due to its 90 plus strings. Thus, he has modified the instrument in a way that helps to tune it in a quick and uncomplicated manner. He is also known as the inventor of ‘mankas’. This innovation of his facilitates in the laying of Kirtans, Ekhartanas, Boltans, etc. Thus, he has helped widen the utility of the Santoor.

He has released more than 100’s of CDs and cassettes. His album, ‘Nomad Christmas’ was nominated for pre Grammy in 1997. One of his albums, ‘Kirwani’ has been acclaimed as the top 10 in the world.

He is also a global ambassador for Rotary International’s Peace and Goodwill.
All these achievements indeed make us believe that Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya is a great pioneer and revolutionary musician who has helped change the face of Indian classical music.

Mr. Kumaresh is a renowned Indian violinist better known in conjunction with his brother as the duo of Ganesh and Kumaresh. Kumaresh is a modern contemporary artist who began his career as a child prodigy playing the violin alongside his brother at age of 5 years.

Both brothers have been infatuated with the violin for as long as they can remember. They have performed at different places in India and around the globe for more than three decades.

Kumaresh’s style can be described as soulful, brimming with creativity and laden with a raw classicism only his brother’s violin can match. For these brothers music comes from the soul. The instrument merely transforms it into harmony.

Ganesh and Kumaresh were trained by their father Shri T.S. Rajagopalan, a veteran violinist. They were so talented that by the age of 10 they were performing with the veterans in the musical field. Their strengths are playing carnatic music, which has a more traditional, back-to-roots kind of feel. They have performed with such luminaries as Dr. Balamurali Krishna, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Vikku Vinayakaram, Late Valangaiman Shanmugasundaram, A R Rehman, John Mclaughin amongst others.
